Discover the Goodness of Blackbutt Honey
When it comes to Western Australian honey, Blackbutt honey is one of our most underrated treasures. Harvested from the towering Eucalyptus patens trees found across the South West, this dark, full-bodied honey is bold, complex, and naturally rich in health-boosting properties.
But here’s something many people don’t know — there are actually two distinct varieties of Blackbutt honey: Dwatta and Yarri.
Dwatta Blackbutt Honey
Dwatta Blackbutt, sourced from the Eucalyptus patens trees around Dwellingup and the Darling Scarp, produces a dark amber honey with a strong, malt-like flavour. It’s rich and robust, with notes of molasses, roasted nuts, and toffee, and a gentle bitterness that gives it depth and complexity.
Dwatta is a favourite for those who enjoy Jarrah — it has a similar boldness and a high Total Activity (TA) level, making it a powerhouse for both taste and natural antibacterial properties.
Yarri Blackbutt Honey
Yarri, sometimes called “Yarri Blackbutt” or Eucalyptus patens var. Yarri, hails from the southern forests of Western Australia, near Manjimup and Walpole.
This variety has a slightly lighter hue and smoother profile — less bitter than Dwatta, with subtle caramel and floral notes. It’s often described as “softer” on the palate but still rich and satisfying, making it perfect for everyday enjoyment or pairing with lighter dishes.
Both honeys share the same natural strength and purity that make Western Australian honey world-renowned — but their differences make them beautifully complementary.
From the Forests of the South West
Our bees forage deep within native forests, far from urban activity, collecting nectar from Blackbutt blossoms that flower in late summer to early autumn.
The result is a honey that embodies the heart of our landscape — strong, grounding, and deeply nourishing.
At South West Honey, we manage the entire process ourselves — from beekeeping to extraction, jarring, and packing — ensuring every jar of Dwatta and Yarri Blackbutt Honey retains its unique flavour and beneficial properties.
Anecdotal Health Benefits Worth Buzzing About
For generations, locals have used darker honeys like Blackbutt to soothe sore throats, ease digestion, and support overall wellness.
One of our long-time customers told us:
“I always keep a jar of Blackbutt honey in the pantry. A spoonful in warm water settles my stomach and gives me a calm, steady energy — it’s my daily ritual.”
While personal stories like this are powerful, they also align with science. Studies from Curtin University and the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) show that Western Australian honeys — especially Blackbutt, Jarrah, and Marri — contain high levels of Total Activity (TA), a measure of antibacterial strength comparable to Manuka honey.
These honeys are naturally rich in antioxidants, hydrogen peroxide activity, and phenolic compounds, which contribute to their healing and antimicrobial properties.
The Science in Simple Terms
Blackbutt honey — both Dwatta and Yarri — is known for:
High antibacterial activity (TA rating)
Low glucose and high fructose, meaning it crystallises slowly and stays smooth
Low glycaemic index, providing a steady energy release
Naturally occurring antioxidants and enzymes that support immune health
It’s honey that’s as functional as it is flavourful.
How to Enjoy Blackbutt Honey
Whether you prefer the boldness of Dwatta or the subtle smoothness of Yarri, both varieties are beautifully versatile. Try them:
Drizzled over soft cheeses or fresh figs for an elegant grazing board
In tea, coffee, or warm lemon water as a soothing tonic
In baking or glazes for an earthy, caramelised finish
On porridge, toast, or Greek yoghurt for a nourishing start to your day
Because of their slow crystallisation and long shelf life, both varieties also make perfect gifts — unique, long-lasting, and authentically Western Australian.
