Where to buy Jarrah honey and Western Australian honey

You can buy Jarrah honey and other Western Australian honey in four ways: online direct from a registered WA beekeeper, from independent grocers and gourmet stores in Perth and the South West, from registered producers at farmers markets, and in some supermarkets. Buying direct gives you the widest range, including Jarrah honey TA35+, with delivery anywhere in Australia.

We are registered beekeepers and a registered food business, with our own hives in the South West of Western Australia, and this is a question we hear often from people who have tasted WA honey once and want to find it again. Here is where to look, whether you are in Perth, Sydney or anywhere in between.

Buy Jarrah honey online, direct from a registered beekeeper

The simplest way to buy Jarrah honey is online from the people who produce it. You see the whole range, you can check the rating and the test result before you order, and it is sent straight to your door.

Our Jarrah honey comes in three grades:

Delivery is a flat $9.95 anywhere in Australia and free on orders over $125. Orders are sent within 2 to 4 business days.

Why it matters that the seller is registered

Buying direct is only a good idea when the seller is a registered beekeeper and a registered, reputable food business. Whoever you buy from, check both.

  • A registered beekeeper. Everyone who keeps bees in Western Australia must register with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, however many hives they have. Registration is how the state traces and manages bee pests and diseases.

  • A registered food business. Anyone who sells honey, even in small amounts, is a food business under the Food Act 2008 and has to be registered with, or notified to, their local government. That is what brings food safety rules and inspections with it.

Honey sold informally, from a backyard hive, a roadside table or a social media post, may have neither. You have no way of checking how it was extracted, stored or labelled, and no one to go back to if something is wrong.

A reputable seller will confirm both registrations when asked. Their label will also carry the business name and address and a lot number, so every jar can be traced.

Jarrah honey in Perth and the South West

If you would rather pick up a jar in person, Western Australian honey is stocked by independent grocers, gourmet food stores and gift shops across Perth and the South West.

Our honey is on the shelf at selected stores in Perth and the South West. The current list is on our find a stockist page. If your local store does not carry it yet, tell them or tell us. Stores can apply through our stock our honey page.

Jarrah honey at Woolworths and Coles

Plenty of people look for Jarrah honey at Woolworths or Coles first. You will find South West Honey in selected Coles stores in Western Australia. We are not stocked at Woolworths right now. Other brands of Jarrah honey do appear in supermarkets, though the range is usually small and changes from store to store and the TA ratings are generally lower.

If you are buying Jarrah honey in a supermarket, read the label for three things: “Product of Australia”, a stated TA rating if you want an active honey, and the name of the producer. Our guide to how to choose honey explains what each of those tells you.

The same goes for chemists such as Chemist Warehouse. Ranges vary, so check what is on the shelf and look for the rating.

For rated Jarrah honey with a test result for the batch, buying direct from a registered beekeeper is the surest route.

Jarrah honey in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and beyond

Jarrah trees grow only in the South West of Western Australia, so Jarrah honey is harder to find on shelves in the eastern states. Ordering online solves that.

We send Western Australian honey to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Hobart, Canberra and Darwin, and to regional addresses, at the same flat rate. Standard delivery takes 3 to 10 days depending on where you are.

Which Western Australian honey to buy

Jarrah is the best known, and it is one of several honeys that come only from this corner of the country.

If you cannot decide, the Honey Flight Tasting Pack lets you try several before buying a full jar.

What TA35+ means when you are buying

TA stands for Total Activity. It is a laboratory measurement of the honey, and the number is the grade: TA10+, TA20+ or TA35+. A higher number is a higher grade and usually a higher price.

When you buy a rated Jarrah honey, look for a seller who can show the test result for the batch. Our guide to TA, UMF and MGO ratings explains the systems.

Choosing between Western Australian honey brands

There are dozens of Western Australian honey brands, from family beekeepers to large packers, and many of them make very good honey. A few questions sort them quickly.

  • Is the business a registered beekeeper and a registered food business?

  • Does the brand keep its own bees?

  • Does the label name the floral source, such as Jarrah or Redgum?

  • Is the rating backed by an independent laboratory test?

  • Does the label say “Product of Australia”?
